A Free Simulation Game for Analysis of
Production Lines
There are many production systems which manufacture several types
of products with every order (for a product) passing through a
sequence of operations. Material for any order may move from one
work station to another in terms of batches (of size 1 or more).
Key performance indices like WIP, order lead times, throughput and
on-time delivery depend on many factors like:
Setup times and cycle times for each order at each work station
Batch sizes (ranging from 1) for orders at work stations
Set of resources available at each work station
Multi-functional machines and multi-skilled workers
Available times of resources.
In many cases,
people use their experience and intuition to have a qualitative
understanding of the effect of these factors on KPIs. However, a
quantitative thinking of how the factors actually affect KPIs
will help understand and analyze production more accurately. For
this reason, we have developed a simple, powerful simulation
game, Velflow-Demo (a software tool with good graphic features)
for illustrating the effect of all those factors on KPIs
quantitatively and accurately. It enables users to perform fast,
extensive and meaningful what-if analysis of workflow for a
pre-constructed example of a production line with multiple products.
The simulation game is based on a rigorous model of multi-product production line and scientific logic. It leverages several years of practical and research experience in quantitative analysis of production systems. It is very unlikely that such simple, powerful simulation games are already available for production analysis. This game will be quite useful in training programs on analysis and management of multi-product production lines.
Anybody interested to have a free copy of the simulation game can visit our web page,
Mixed Model Production Line . The page also contains a brief YouTube video of the tool for demo purpose. This copy has no expiry date.
